What followed in the next two weeks was very little rest, much killing, and Knox earning himself a total of nine Monster Cores. He got the weakest of the picks, but he didn’t complain, as he did so much less than everyone else present. Moreover, their journey took them closer to the Shadowfall Swamp, until on the final day of their hunt, they ended the horde in one final strike.

Scouts reported losing some of the strongest to the swamp, but no one wanted to venture into it, as it had a reputation of containing C Ranked and above monsters. Which Knox also learned was the max Rank that most Adventurers reached. In the entire small army of fifty-eight souls, not a single one was above C Rank. In fact, only nine, including Dernal and Caleb, were C Ranked at all.

Knox wasn’t sure if he should be as surprised as he was when he found that out, but he imagined there should be more with how he was progressing. He’d taken half of his Monster Cores and done what John did with all of his, absorbing the internal essence. It wasn’t as potent as a pill that could be made from them, but it was a quick and dirty way to speed your advancement. Like all monsters, their Core was filled with Pure essence.

It had brought John over the threshold and broken him through to D Rank by the last week and he hadn’t stopped talking about it.

“These Cores provided as much essence as a freaking dungeon run, a dungeon run!” John said, his arms doing most of the talking for him, waving about here and there. “Speaking of which, aren’t we up for our second run now?”

“Hhmm. Yep,” Dernal said. He had put away all his Cores, the biggest haul in the group, as he’d done more than anyone else to keep the small army going with his heals.

Knox really saw the extent of Dernal’s power when he had to push himself to keep so many targets alive at once. It had been like watching a fireworks show the one time the mayor had sprung to pay the expense for a festival. He was here, then there, then back over here in a flash. It was truly amazing to watch.

The dungeon camp was much the same, despite most of the Adventurers rotating out and in again to take on the monster horde. Before their next dungeon run—it was set to start the next morning—Knox wanted to see about making some purchases and learning more about runes.

So, with his mind filled with what he expected would be an adventure all of its own, he set out into the camp with John at his side as a guide.
